CARROT BAY
Located
on the north shore of Tortola between Apple Bay and Cane Garden Bay you will find Carrot Bay one of the last reminding
traditional village in the British Virgin Islands. Still today men here
continue to fish for a living, and most afternoons you can buy fresh catch from
the nearby wharf. The hillsides around Carrot Bay are verdant and moist, a good
setting for farming.
Carrot
Bay is a center of local island life, glimpsed from the picturesque drive along
its coastal road. Here you will find some of the best local food in the
islands. The pace and style of life in Carrot Bay is peaceful and
community-focused. It is a nice place to go for a walk, or to sit on the
waterfront and pass the time of day with whomever you meet.
DEMOGRAPHIC
Unlike many other surrounding
villages, Carrot Bay has been able to maintain its ethnic backstory. Over 95%
of its population is of African or Afro-Caribbean descent.
RELIGION
Carrot Bay predominately is a Christian
community with a 7th Day Adventist Church and a Methodist Church.
CULTURE
With
a population predominate of Afro-Caribbean, descended from the slaves
brought to the islands by the British.This heritage is important to the authenticity of Carrot Bay. The look and feel
is wholly original, with native foods, languages and songs still intact.
FESTIVALS & EVENTS
The main annual event
in Carrot Bay is a two-week festival in August commemorating the 1834
Emancipation Act, which abolished slavery. This Cultural Fiesta celebrates the
different cultures of the Islands with a county fair sort of atmosphere, with
plenty of food and drink.
One of the most
popular event during the August festival is the ever popular, donkey race, nothing
will entice a BVI crowd like a horse or donkey race.
GETTING
TO CARROT BAY
From Road Town, take the coast road
towards West End, turn right after Big Ben's Suprette following signs for Long
Bay. Go over the top of Zion Hill, at the bottom of the hill on the other side
you will reach a T junction (Sebastian’s Hotel will be in front of you) - turn
right towards Bombas Shack. Continue on that road passing The Sugar Mill Hotel
on the right and over the small hill into Carrot Bay.
GOVERNMENT SERVICES
Social events, lectures and other community outreach
programs are held at the Abraham Leonard Community Centre. In addition Carrot
Bay sub Post office offers the resident in this area postal services

Carrot
Bay is also a center of varied and excellent
restaurants. Youwill find local West Indian food
at Palm's Delight and Mrs. Scatliffe's restaurant and open air locations with spectacular seaside views of
the surrounding community of Carrot Bay.
Banankeet Cafe offers undoubtedly one of the most spectacular ocean views in a land known for these, Bananakeet
Cafe features top rated cuisine. Here you will find some of
the best local food in the islands.
