CANE GARDEN BAY, TORTOLA, BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS

Cane Garden Bay is located on the northwestern coastline of Tortola a  jewel of the British Virgin Islands stretching about 2 square miles of white-sand beach hems a favoured anchorage for boaters and with sheer mountains dominate the landscape making Cane Garden Bay the most popular tourist destination in the British Virgin Islands.

DEMOGRAPHIC

The population of Cane Garden Bay is approximately 332. The majority of the population (83%) are Afro-Caribbean. Other large ethnic groups include those of European/ Caucasian origin (7%) while the remaining 9 percentage of the population are multiracial with a makeup of Indian/Black/White mixed, and mixed-race Hispanic descent.

RELIGION

Christianity is the prevailing religion in Cane Garden Bay, with 45 percent of the population Methodist, 21 percent Anglican, 18 percent Baptist or Pentecostal, and 6 percent Roman Catholic.

EDUCATION

Ivan Dawson Primary School is the only government school located in Cane Garden Bay.

SPORTS & RECREATION

Cane Garden Bay is a favorite amongst water sport enthusiasts. Aside from swimming, surfing, boating, jet skiing, boogey boarding, windsurfing, kayaking and other water sports attract tourists and BVI residents alike, who also enjoy the bay’s many beachside bars and restaurants that line the beach, are well worth a visit for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. You can walk from one to the other in a sort of evening beach crawl, sampling specialty rum drinks, pumpkin fritters, conch, and other Caribbean delights. Live music is almost always available in one or more establishments. For sightseers, there’s also Callwood Rum Distillery a 18th century rum distillery which  has been in operation here for over 300 years and features the original structure of a Sugar Cane distillery. Visitors to this rustic site can purchase samples of rum or take home a few bottles to share. The original boiler still operates and produces rum, which in then stored in original storage casks. The old guard house is also intact and has been turned into an art gallery and gift shop. In addition Cane Garden Bay is also a popular place to get hitched; with many patrons and newlyweds celebrating there after getting married down by the water.

There is a wide cross section of business establishment in the Cane Garden Bay community inclusive of Seafood market,Boutique, Ice Cream Parlour, Gift shop, Variety store, Art Gallery and supermarket where everything from local spices, jams, rums, and soaps to handcrafted jewelry, silk-screened fabrics, and local art, can be found.

WINING & DINING

For a taste of the Caribbean island’s rich cultural mix and local delicacies such as fresh lobster, conch, spicy goat curries, Johnny Cakes and West Indian roti Cane Garden Bay is known for its many seafood restaurants and bars
